20th c.
Carved wood, mud, cloth, feathers, shells
Without stand: 34" x 8" x 5"
Provenance: Allan Stone Collection, New York
Exhibition: Hidden Power in African Art, The Israel Museum, May 21, 2014 – January 17, 2015, Jerusalem
Senufo culture crosses boundaries of ethnicity and language from southern Mali to Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast. The Kulebele, the Senufo woodcarving social-group, have one of the most feared powers among the Senufo: kafigeledjo divination. Kafigeledjo divination seeks to preserve and uphold Senufo social guidelines concerning descent by uncovering illicit behaviors and punishing the accused with supernatural sanctions. The shrouded kafigeledjo figure represents invisible bush spirits and function as a divination device. It is concealed within a small hut and access is restricted to the most enlightened senior male and, occasionally, female members.
