Provenance: A San Antonio, Texas collection

Famed Texas landscape artist and instructor Frank Reaugh was born near Jacksonville, Illinois in 1860, moving with his family in 1876 to a farm near Terrell, Texas, and later to Oak Cliff near Dallas in 1890. Early on, Reaugh decided to focus on depicting the landscapes around him in North and Northwest Texas, an expanse of cattle and livestock grazing the wide open plains. He began copying images from popular magazines and taught himself cattle and sheep anatomy. And as early as 1883, Reaugh began sketching - often from the saddle - cattle drives and roundups near Wichita Falls, beginning a tradition of annual sketching trips to the plains that he continued until he was almost eighty. After the trip, he would return home with his sketches, using them as the basis for large and polished studio masterpieces including such notable works as "The One-O Roundup", "Watering the Herd", and "The Approaching Herd". Later during this time, Reaugh was able to travel to Europe to further study art technique, copying artworks in the Louvre and at the Academie Julian (Paris). Returning to Texas, Reaugh became progressively more recognized, with several group and solo exhibitions held of his work, along with an increasing demand among art students to accompany him on his annual sketching trip. Some of his notable students included artists Alexandre Hogue and Florence McClung. After Reaugh died in Dallas in 1945, his reputation continued to grow among private collectors and institutions, and he is now considered a major Texas artist. The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas is considered the main repository for Reaugh material. Other institutions with Reaugh works include the Gilcrease Museum, the University of Texas, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Historical Society, Dallas Public Library, and the J. Evetts Haley History Center, Midland, Texas.
