Description
Early Moghan
242 x 106 cm (7' 11" x 3' 6")
Caucasus, mid 19th century
Condition: very good according to age, mostly good pile, some small professional repairs
Warp: wool, weft: cotton, pile: wool
The rugs produced in the southeast Caucasus around the Moghan steppe and Akstafa feature a wider variety of colours than those from many other regions of the Caucasus.
They are particularly characterised by certain hues exemplified in this fine carpet: the brilliant sharp red, the bright green, the camel-coloured light brown, and perhaps most importantly, the burnt orange. These colours help denote the region and age, and the importance of colour choice in both creating the composition and as a tool for the weavers can be observed in numerous elements of the design.
Devices are used to showcase as many colours as possible in close succession - for instance, consider the single diamond form inserted into the lower border. It should also be noted that the density of the blue ground is achieved only after multiple immersions in the dye vat - a process that would be expensive and extremely time-consuming.
The design of stacked rows of stylised floral palmettes is unusual, with only a few examples of this design and quality published. The variety of colours and the design help date this rug to the mid-19th century.
