-The arrival of A.M Rana - In the early 1920’s A.M Rana (Arthmaram Motiram Rana) was accompanied by his wife and 6 children, all of whom were born in India. He was a father to 12 children, 6 of whom were born in South Africa. He established his first business, namely the international import and export of spice known as A.M. Rana and Sons. This trend was followed by many other entrepreneurs known as ‘Passenger Indians’ who independently funded and established themselves, locally, as traders. A need developed for trading in various other products. This resulted in the fresh produce market being established in Warrick Avenue , a lucrative industry to the economy of Natal. The Fresh produce market opened 01 February 1934 and the current Victoria Street market, better known as the ‘ Indian Market’, was subsequently born. This became an outlet for more , diversified goods. It was here that Mr. Rana established his first art gallery, initially trading in indigenous Indian artifacts to the local and foreign clientele. He subsequently was introduced to African Art. -The ‘Rana Collection’ - It was at this point that his passion and love for African art was ignited. He began to gain knowledge of different art forms, from countries within the African continent, differentiating between fine, abstract and antique artwork, in different materials (eg wood, stone/marble). As time progressed, his sons were incorporated into the business. Some remained in the spice industry, whilst my grandfather, Amrathlal Motiram, followed in his father’s footsteps, and established his own business. This resulted in the birth of Joe’s African Art & Collectibles or Joe’s Curios for short. It was established around 1980. My father, Amrathlal Etesh Rana, joined his dad in 1989 and managed the galleries until 2010. Starting from the early 1900’s, with my great grandfather, until 2010, both my grandfather and dad, created their own selection of unique, ethnic, African artwork. This was called ‘The Rana Collection’. The pieces of artwork described in this collection, has lineage to myself and my brother , being the 4 th generation of the Rana family, and 3rd generation born in South Africa. -Rana & Rana Art - Joes & Teshar (subsidiary to Joe’s) has finally embraced the eCommerce market as its new platform to exhibit & retail our Antique Artwork, sculptures & fine jewelry products via the revised name, Rana & Rana African Art
